Liu Yunlong | Studio Dahao

Liu Yunlong is a product designer, also specialising in Chinese craft research, antique collecting, archaeology, and the study of traditional natural materials and techniques. He is the founder of Studio Dahao (大好設計河山), which first took shape during his studies in Denmark after graduating from Jiangnan University's Industrial Design programme. While his work began in conventional product design, it has gradually evolved to focus on Chinese traditional crafts, natural materials and traditional making processes.

The studio's projects include charcoal ceramics series, Tibetan black clay series SUPERTIBET, and the yellow straw woven homeware series. Maintaining this research-driven approach, Liu divides his work between studio development and regular research field trips studying regional crafts and antiquities. Operating at the intersection of craft preservation, archaeology and material innovation, Liu has developed a distinctive methodology that bridges historical techniques with contemporary design. His recent projects include a coffee set inspired by Song Dynasty Ding ware bird feeders, and the ‘Playful Antique' furniture series informed by studies of ancient Chinese furniture forms.

Through the research field trips, Liu has built a personal collection of ancient ceramic pieces. Unlike traditional collectors, he approaches these finds with a distinctive designer’s perspective. These objects aren’t just artifacts to him, but sources of inspiration that directly influence his studio’s work, creating a living link between historical craftsmanship and modern design.
