YIWEN

Yiwen lives and works in Hangzhou. She received her BA (2017) and MA (2022) in Printmaking from the China Academy of Art. Working primarily with mixed media, her practice explores the relationship between nature, living organisms, environments and human intervention.

A move from city to countryside a decade ago marked a turning point in Yiwen's perspective. Now living in a house on the outskirts of Hangzhou, she maintains a close connection with nature, spending much of her time surrounded by moss, plants, insects and stones. This change in environment inspired her to begin making work that responds to her natural surroundings. During the daily walks, Yiwen observes and records subtle, often overlooked natural phenomena as an outsider. Different ecosystems – rainforests, oceans, grasslands – each bring new sensations and understanding. She finds connections in these fragmented experiences, discovering that this organic way of working suits her practice unexpectedly well.

Nature is the most freely given gift to humankind. Through her work, Yiwen uses the microcosm of natural phenomena to explore the macrocosm of humanity. Rather than simply depicting landscapes, she examines how our perception transforms nature the moment we observe it. Combining rational and personal perspectives, she traces the interplay between natural growth patterns and human traces.

Her recent works incorporate printmaking's repetitive processes into mixed media, balancing scientific observation with poetic sensitivity. Her latest series of paintings focus on molluscs' protective mechanisms and longevity, using softer artistic language to express her personal interaction with nature.
